This is the first in a series of Grain Creative book reviews. Over the Christmas holidays, I had the time and head space to pick up a few books. The first one I read is Help!: How to Become Slightly Happier and Get a Bit More Done by Oliver Burkeman, author of This Column Will Change Your Life in The Guardian.

This book was kindly given to me by Peter Donaldson at Prontaprint London when I was printing out a ridiculous number of heavy A3 boards for some focus groups on the Coral website redesign we did last spring (and launching later this year).

Help! is sort of a review of a lot of other books and websites. There are chapters on everything from personal wellbeing to spirituality, productivity to happiness. Oliver Burkeman does add his own anecdotes and interpretations – and Help! spurred me on to buying a whole load of other books which are probably very telling in their choice alone. The other book reviews in this series will reveal which ones were most appealing to me.

That is exactly the beauty of this book. It presents quite a few new ideas and angles on wide-ranging topics, and with all the references provided it’s easy to delve deeper into any areas which perk your interest.
