If you are a type geek, you may have noticed that we’re using Frutiger as our company font, with the similar Carto Gothic appearing on the website. Not only do we love Frutiger, but its actual reason for existing ties in neatly with our own areas of design interest and experience.
Frutiger was designed by the great Swiss type designer Adrian Frutiger, for the signage at the Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. It is similar to his earlier typeface Univers, but significantly warmer and friendlier. Adrian Frutiger started to create it by cutting out the words Départs and Departures by hand, which may be the reason for some very unique details that make Frutiger so personal and welcoming.
How could there be a more perfect font for us? It’s informal and clear with just the right amount of heartfelt emotion. Christoph’s world in particular revolves around aircraft, as you can see from his work with Qantas and United Airlines amongst others. And being a company with clients and designers from many different parts of the world we are all familiar with airports!
If you just read that whole thought about typography without falling asleep, you might be interested in this book, which we highly recommend: Just My Type by Simon Garfield. Enjoy!
