Next Gen Skills Academy

Encouraging UK talent in the gaming, VFX and animation industries


The UK is one of the world’s leading forces in gaming, animation and VFX. A collaborative venture between further education, higher education and the industry, Next Gen Skills Academy encourages young talent through initiatives like work placements and mentoring schemes. The aim is to elevate the UK’s education system to the same high standards as the industry. With buy-in from industry names like Aardman, Channel 4, Framestore, HIT Entertainment, Microsoft, Sony and others, Next Gen looks set to achieve its goals, creating new resources and opportunities for fresh talent joining the industry.

Seeking to raise awareness, Next Gen asked Grain to create their identity and website. The hexagonal symbol is both 2D and 3D, with colour and line transforming its geometry into a cube. Supported by clean, contemporary typography, the honeycomb motif suggests a beehive of industry, while the three-dimensional aspect recalls the virtual spaces created for animations, games and VFX.

Supported by hero images promoting the quality and variety of the UK industry, an interim website (designed by Grain) succeeded in raising awareness. Next Gen launched to the public in September 2014 and, having helped them achieve their initial goals they asked us to create their continuing website. The new site – which we also maintain – is an engaging, user-friendly platform, encouraging its target audience to explore useful info on courses, jobs and placement opportunities.
