International School of Brussels
Connecting a diverse school community
The International School of Brussels has over 1500 students from 70 countries. With such a large and diverse community, the ISB Directory plays an integral role: welcoming pupils and parents, while maintaining a sense of community spirit. Our project partner, Schoolpages, commissioned Grain to translate ISB’s printed directory into a new, user-friendly online version. This involved converging five legacy databases into one, creating a user interface for an iPhone app, and a website accessible via desktop and mobile devices.
Designed to appeal to its key audience – parents of children aged 4-12 – the unified database focuses on families, students, faculty members and maintenance staff. In designing the ISB iPhone app, we referenced the look-and-feel of Apple’s own operating system to provide parents with familiar visual cues. The app provides powerful search-and-sort functions and the ability to create customised groups and read school news, while recommending local suppliers via its ‘Advantage’ section.
The directory has proved hugely successful, advancing ISB’s mission to create an inclusive community, demonstrate a progressive spirit, and support its ‘green campus’ credentials by reducing print production by around 99%.
“Grain are committed. They listen. Their graphic design is impeccable and they have an impressive technical network to handle implementation. They’re fresh, innovative, fast and reliable on turnarounds, and a pleasure to work with.” – Patrice Gorin, CEO of Schoolpages and Project Director for ISB.
